52 Psaltery & Lyre: Dayna Patterson, “There is a certain comfort”

clover

;

;

There is a certain comfort

to imagine the space

where you will rest,

to stand above it,

see the green of its turf,

to observe a nearby tree,

its ruddy flowers and fruit,

to read your own name

chiseled on the stone.

There is a certain peace

to feel your feet planted

in the place where they will stop

the hop skip jump of life,

to notice a clump of clover

deliver sunlight down roots

where someday you’ll lie,

close lipped and feeding.

Dayna Patterson sometimes waxes morbid in her fantasizing. She would prefer a lilac bush, or a smattering of wildflowers, to a stone. For her bio, click here.
