Come see Laura and her son Zachary’s walk to church in the Bay Area.
Laura writes:
Our kindergartner loves photography, and this was the perfect opportunity. We headed out on the first sunny morning we’ve had for a week or so, and as we walked along that Sunday we talked about rainbows and how you need both sun and rain to make them. With that in mind, we decided it would be fun to take pictures of whatever we thought was interesting and also to build our own rainbow with the photos. The five-year-old took all the pictures. This is his walk to church.

We started in the front driveway with our “bloom where you’re planted” bush. A hedge grew up and over a geranium, but the geranium grew right through the hedge and sends out pink flowers every now and then. He likes the flower inside the bush.

White clouds in the sky. You need clouds for rain and rainbows.
“I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. . ..Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” (Genesis 9:13, 16)

This ball is actually purple (or, per the official rainbow color: violet).
“The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. And they began to call out to him, Hail, king of the Jews!” (Mark 15:16-18)

“Black is a color — HEY, a tire is black!” He added the stickers the other day.
“You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain while it blazed with fire to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness. Then the LORD spoke to you out of the fire.” (Deuteronomy 4:11-12)

Blue — another rainbow color
“[They] saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky. But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.” (Exodus 24:10-11)

Gray — like the clouds before the rain. This is the sidewalk.
“He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills.” (Psalm 147:8)

Red — the lights on the back of the car are red.
“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” (Isaiah 1:18)

Green — another rainbow color.
“He is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings grass from the earth.” (2 Samuel 23:4)

You can’t leave lions out of the story. Between the lions is a pot of spring bulbs.
“The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.” Isaiah 11:6

This is the hill above our house. The coyotes roam around it and sing us to sleep in the fall and spring. Crickets sing us to sleep in the summer. Birds greet us with morning and evening choruses every day and hawks scream in the sky searching for mice, rabbits, snakes and other delectables.
“God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31)

Laura, I love this. Has Zachary seen it?
I absolutely loved this, too… the colours are amazing: the red and green are a couple of my favourites! I always find it fascinating to see the things that a child thinks deserve to be preserved in a photo. Our little girl Cara (4) has her own camera, and her photos are always hilarious: and so telling.
The scriptures to accompany are lovely, too, and inspiring. A journey like this is a very good church experience, in my mind.
You are right about enjoying what kids think deserve to be preserved in a photo. I am often stingy and impatient with the kids when they take pictures. I don’t know why.
I also prefer pictures where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling. So forced. It makes no sense. Brent always picks the pictures out of the “duds” pile (the ones I don’t want to keep or am not planning on putting in an album) and likes those the best.
Pictures are worth a thousand words; time with a child is priceless. It’s touching that a dad thinks this is an important thing to do.
You could have forced him into a suit and told him to sit quietly on a hard bench for 3 hours instead! LOL
thanks for looking at my pitctres. + i have a ladybug pellow pet + i/m learning to play piano…
Now Zachary has seen the pictures online. He was happy to see them up where everyone could look at them, and he seemed particularly impressed when he found out how far away some of the viewers live. He’s also enjoyed looking at everyone else’s pictures, so keep them coming!
What a great walk to church. =)
Zachary,
Your pictures were great. I particularly liked the flower in the bush and the very interesting red picture. I bet your ladybug pillow pet is red, too. =)
Zachary’s Great Grandma and Grandpa and Aunt Tammy enjoyed this very much! Great job!!
Tell Zachary that grandma likes this a lot. He can take pictures when he comes to my house.
Awsome! Good job all around.
Zachary, you have a splendid eye for color, texture, and motion. I’m betting that we’ll see you on the Academy Awards night in fifteen years!

Hey Zachary, lovely photos, and I really liked the way you and your mom thought of the rainbow idea for your photos.
I loved the pictures and the commentary! What a great walk to church … I also love the world right after a rain. So clean and fresh. Thanks for sharing Zachary and Laura!
Wow, Zachary, I loved the red photograph. It was like an abstract painting.
This is wonderful!
Zachary, you and my son Isaac would get along! He LOVES color and photography too! What a great idea for your walk to church!
