Today’s Ride to Church comes to us from Blake, who visited the Grand Canyon and writes:
Westerners transplanted to the Great Plains, my family now lives in and enjoys Kansas City. We like the uber-green of the little hills and the open plains. We came here from Denver, and while it took several years, we’re now accustomed to the terrain and the humidity (“It’s Kansas giving us a hug,” my dw says). We’ve made peace with the bugs and actually enjoy the cacophony of the cicadas and the flickering of the lumbering fireflies.
Since our normal drive to church is suburban America mundane, this particular Sunday trip was memorable for my wife and me. We miss breathing the mountain air, walking in the pines and taking in the dramatic vistas of the Rocky Mountains. I never thought I’d also find inspiring beauty in the comparatively lifeless high desert or the level prairie, but I see it now. Each setting provides an opportunity to be inspired and connect with God. But the Rockies have always felt like home to me.
I’ve spent most of my life in California, Utah and Colorado, but in all that time, I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon. So on a Sunday morning whim, while visiting relatives in St. George, Utah, I had a revelation — we were within 3-4 hours drive of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Wouldn’t it be great to take a Sunday drive? So off we go!
Blake, I loved reading about your experience visiting the Grand Canyon. I went there when I was a kid (maybe 10?), so I don’t really remember it. Seeing these pictures makes me feel like I need to bump it up on my to-go list and get my kids there, especially.
Beautiful photos. The Grand Canyon certainly allows one to feel the wonder of God.
Loved the photos. Thanks for sharing.
I love the Grand Canyon. I’ve been to each rim once, and both times it’s been amazing. I can hardly comprehend its size.
I grew up in St. George, and made my parents take me before I graduated from high school. That’s when we went to the North Rim. :)
The Grand Canyon is one of nature’s most amazing holy places. Thanks for the pics.
