Ride to Church in Vienna

Today’s Ride to Church comes to us from Dean, who is living in Vienna, Austria right now.   Dean writes:

We are living in Grinzing, the northernmost community in the city, which is nestled against the vineyards and hills of the Vienna Woods. Founded in… well, no one knows when. It was first mentioned in 1114, when it was already clearly an old and well-established town.   Here is what our ride to church looks like:

   I spent a semester abroad in Vienna years ago and still miss it. The Hundertwasserhaus, the Riesenrad, the Votivkirche, so many familiar sights! Thank you for sharing and making me homesick for Austria! (Soucek was the last name of the stake patriarch, I believe, when I was there. Possibly Bishop Soucek’s father?)

   Question–why can’t you go to the chapel that’s so close to where you live?

   And are you from Vienna, living there temporarily, working there, etc.?

   Ahhhhhh, home sweet home. My dad was the mission president out in Austria about 10 years ago. We’d go to Church in Silbergasse. We lived just up the street. Fun times. I love Vienna. It’s one of my favorite places. And I have a sis. and husband living out there still (but they go to Church at the Stake building…can’t remember the street name right now).

   Please enjoy it all extra for me! I love Austria…

   Thanks for these amazing photos!! I served my mission in Austria and spent more than a year in Vienna, so this brought back a lot of great memories–especially that shot of the Boeklinstrasse chapel. Such a great city!!

   @EmiG: Yes, Bishop Soucek’s father would be the patriarch you remember. Great family. @Heather: I work at the U.S. embassy. As temporary residents (and since my family struggle with German) we fall under the international ward. @Fran: Mission home at Fuerfangasse 4! I really miss having a mission headquartered here. The stake center is Böcklinstrasse 55 and is the chapel we attend. Who are your sister and brother-in-law? I would almost have to know them. @Mary Beth: Vienna rarely gets snow. We’re not in the right part of Europe or high enough in elevation. @Everyone else: Thanks, and enjoy!

    Oh, this makes me feel homesick! I studied abroad in Vienna two years ago, and living in the 18th district, I attended the Vienna 1st in Silbergasse. It was a beautiful walk in an incredible city. Thank you so much for these pictures; they’re amazing!
