Today I discovered a lot of my old music, recorded years ago: when I used to do a lot more recording. I still sing this song to my girls, and they love it – so I thought I’d share it here. There’s a good message (or two) in there.

Something so warm about the image of you singing this to your children. Thanks! I’d love to hear more of and about your recording days. Well done.
Matt, who sings this song? I want it! Listening to it also motivates me to do a better job with my guitar lessons. I have visions of singing bedtime songs to my children whilst playing my guitar. But they are getting older and time is running short.
Heather, it’s Ernie! :)

Love this song. Love the lyrics, the tune, and Andrew singing it! :)
Wait! Andy, this is really you singing??
It IS me singing, (main and backing vocal) and playing guitar… I’m really not much of a singer, and that’s what stops me from performing and sharing my music more often: but it’s such a beautiful song, I’m hoping that it carries through.
I’ll sell you the mp3 if you want! ;) Not sure how I’d send the appropriate part of the royalty to Sesame Street, tho!
Andy, no way!! I’ve listened to it several times, but each time I think it must not be you because I can’t hear any hint of a British accent.
You’re not much of a singer?? It’s beautiful–not just the song, but your voice.
So sweet. I’ve always loved Ernie’s version, and Aaron Neville’s duet, too, your version is a delight. What a beautiful gift for your girls.
Thanks Rachel – I hadn’t heard Aaron Neville’s version before! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9OVTfgVJ8Y) … In fact, I learned this song from a sheet of chords and words from a friend before I heard the Sesame Street version, and I’m always amazed when I hear it, at how fast it chugs along. My version is slower… perhaps, more contemplative. The song’s meaning to me is bound up with the loneliness of exploration – that, if you travel somewhere exciting and unknown (which I’ve always felt the desire to do), you’ll probably have to leave your loved ones behind.
Or: if you’re going to travel to the moon, then make sure you don’t forget where you came from.
I suppose that’s what we’re doing on D&S. Plus, this proves that there’s room on the rocket-ship. :)
Love it! You rock. (and I can hear a hint of the Brit coming through)
Andy — your voice is perfect for the song. Love it!
ADORE
