I’ve taken to describing Doves and Serpents as a “blog about religion and culture where I write a column once a week about books and music and work with a team of eight amazing writers.”
I’ve come up with this concise definition because occasionally people I know ask about those links on Facebook or they’ve come across D&S in one way or another and they want to know what we’re about (and they either know all about Mormons or nothing about Mormons).
It’s never easy to explain our hobbies or our passions. I get odd looks if I mention to the other moms on the school run that I have to get home because I have a post due on a book I just read or one of my teenage music obsessions. I never even mention that I’ve spent the day thinking about an issue raised in the posts of one of my fellow-writers or in a thoughtful comment from one of our readers. D&S is both my hobby and my passion, an on-line home where I’ve been lucky enough to be amongst people I admire having conversations that move me, make me think and leave me inspired. I hope it’s been the same for some of you.
This week, to celebrate our one-year anniversary, we’ll be re-running some of our favorite posts from the last year and introducing a brand new column later in the week.
Thank you for reading.

Congrats Doves and Serpents! A huge milestone in the life of a … well, “blog” seems too profane. In your case it’s more a “community writing project with heart and soul.” Stay young and free, D&S! Live long and prosper.
Thanks Matt!
Congratulations! I’m looking forward to another year :)
Thank you!
