The position of Utah Poet Laureate was established in 1997. It is a five-year post during which the PL travels throughout the state and promotes literature with an emphasis on poetry. The first PL of Utah was David Lee, the “pig poet of Texas,” followed by Kenneth Brewer, then Katharine Coles. Lance Larsen is the first Mormon Utah Poet Laureate.
