Today’s Ride to Church comes to us from Carole (who has also graciously shared her Rides to Church in Avon and Paradise, Utah and a last Ride to Church in Avon, Utah) who visited Silver Gate, Montana with her family. Carole writes:
Cooke City, a town neighboring Silver Gate, was a mining community in the late 1800’s and the red general store was built then and is a historical landmark. The area was in danger in the 1990’s of being mined for gold and there is a photo of President Bill Clinton in the store for having preserved the area–only 5 miles from Yellowstone National Park.
At the log cabin church in Silver Gate, there were about 25-30 people in attendance. The first meeting was testimony meeting as is typical of any LDS ward on Fast Sunday. The testimonies focused on Christ and the Atonement. Joanna, our daughter in law, bore her testimony in her skinny jeans. We were the only women in pants and felt perfectly comfortable there. One of the best things about it was that they managed to do the entire block in 2 hours instead of 3. Primary consisted of our two grandkids from Salt Lake, plus two boys from Cody, Wyoming. The men meet outside for priesthood. They said only one time did they have to come in because of inclement weather.
After church we continued on to the top of the Beartooths–over 10,000 feet high. It was cold and windy. I’ve stood on this mountain summer and summer since 1961 and have always needed a jacket or coat–no matter what time of year.
We stopped to look at some falls. Here’s the family in front of me wearing what they wore to church. My husband wore jeans and plaid shirt. The kids and our son wore what they would have worn in Salt Lake. It was a nice day. Afterward Joanna visited with a Latino man who converted to Mormonism because of working and attending the Cooke Pass branch.
The pictures are lovely, Carole! This made my morning!
We live in Helena, Montana, but have never been down to Cooke City and Silver Gate. It looks a lot like some other areas of western Montana we’ve seen though. So beautiful! Thank you for sharing this.
This is gorgeous! What a lovely ride to church! Thanks so much for sharing!
