Reuben’s (Bike) Ride to Church

My name is Reuben Collins, and I’ve lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for 5 years.   My local LDS chapel is only about two miles from my home, but there’s a lot to see along the way.   Most weeks, I grab my headphones and the newest episode of Mormon Stories or This American Life and make the short trek by bicycle.   Minneapolis is one of the nation’s best places to ride a bicycle, so many other members of my ward choose to ride a bicycle, too.   These photos were all taken in November of 2010, before everything was covered in two feet of snow.

My sights along my route are exactly what you would expect to find in traditional neighborhoods developed between 1900 and 1930.   My neighborhood is full of 100 year old homes, businesses, schools, and restaurants.

So join us here at Doves & Serpents for Reuben’s Bike Ride to Church:

Here are some links that Reuben included that wouldn’t fit into the text captions in the slideshow:

*Powderhorn Park is one of the largest parks in South MPLS and hosts some of the best cultural events in the Twin Cities, most notably the MayDay Parade and Art Sled Rally.

*Bancroft Elementary is a stunning old structure — the kind of neighborhood school we don’t build anymore.

*The Sabathani Community Center houses another one of the great old buildings in my neighborhood.

*In 2008, a local event dubbed Walldogs on Nicollet painted over a dozen murals along Nicollet Avenue.
