On Hearing “God Willing” by the Dropkick Murphys for the First Time

Twelve Irishmen scream
from gastrointestinal pain,
thrash splintered guitars,
race headlong down dark stairs,
the last ten steps missing,
and the stairwell empties
into a too-bright, grease-
bespattered lab where three
meth addicts lose their grip, swing
enraged spider monkeys
by the tail, an unscheduled
experiment in centrifugal
force, as Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture”
plays at 1001 decibels . . . backwards.
Play it again, please.
